Over one thousand Mosquito's were built in Canada at the De Havilland subsidiary in Downsview, Toronto with over 450 of them using the Packard Merlin 225 which developed 1,680hp at 3,000rpm, over 150hp more than the British equivalent at the same boost pressure. This Merlin 225 aero engine, a more powerful, Packard version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin 25 was built under licence in the USA to be fitted into the Canadian built De Havilland Mosquito 25 or 26 light bomber and night fighter. A series of rapidly applied developments, brought about by wartime needs, markedly improved the engine's performance and durability. More Merlin engines were made for the four-engined Avro Lancaster heavy bomber than for any other aircraft of that time however, the engine is most closely associated with the Supermarine Spitfire, starting with the Spitfire's maiden flight in 1936. The first operational aircraft to enter service using the Merlin were the Fairey Battle, the Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire. The first Merlin engine (PV-12) ran in 1933 and, after several modifications, the first production variants were built in 1936. Merlin engines remain in Royal Air Force service today with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and power many restored aircraft in private ownership worldwide. Production ceased in 1950 after a total of almost 150,000 engines had been delivered, the later variants being used for airliners and military transport aircraft. The Packard 225 was a version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin built in the United States. First aircraft due to be delivered to Royal Navy early 2018.Considered a British icon, the Rolls-Royce Merlin was one of the most successful aircraft engines of the World War II era and many variants were built by the Rolls-Royce factories in Derby, Crewe and Glasgow, as well as by Ford of Britain at their Trafford Park factory, near Manchester.Modifications include new cockpit avionics, and limited ship optimisation, including a folding main rotor head and folding tail to allow their use from ships for littoral manoeuvre. Merlin Life Sustainment Programme (MLSP) will upgrade 25 Merlin Mk3/3a to a Mk4/4a specification.Can transport more than 4 tonnes of freight ranging from bulky cargo carried internally or underslung including artillery, Land Rovers or light-strike vehicles.It’s a multi-role helicopter used in both strategic and tactical operational roles, most recently to great effect in Iraq and Afghanistan Campaigns. The Mk 3 is a medium support helicopter designed to operate in all-weathers day and night.The Merlin Mk3 is currently in the process of being modified to the Mk4/Mk4a.The DE&S team based is based mainly in Yeovil at RNAS Yeovilton.The DE&S Merlin Project Team, based mainly in Yeovil with staff at MOD Abbey Wood, RNAS Culdrose and RNAS Yeovilton, provides in-service support to all the UK’s Merlins.Previously deployed to Sierra Leone on HMS Argus as part of the UK support to the UN Ebola virus containment activity. Currently contributing to maritime security worldwide, including anti-piracy and drug smuggling activities.Operates globally, deployed on Royal Navy Frigates, Destroyers and Support Craft and will in future fly from the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers.The Royal Navy operates 30 Merlin Mk2 helicopters, based at RNAS Culdrose.The Royal Navy’s Merlin helicopters are tasked with anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare as well as troop carrying, casualty evacuation and medium lift and search and rescue duties.
